Czech Republic: Beric Dondarrian

Beric Dondarrian, leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners, is a perfect match for the Czech Republic. For starters, the Czech Republic has been split up and put back together again more than a few times. Parts of this country were annexed, there was a name change, and the area was once part of the Holy Roman Empire. What we know today as the Czech Republic looked very diferent just a few decades ago.

Likewise, Dondarrian is is always getting torn apart and put back together. He’s died six times, and each time, he’s been resurrected by the Lord of Light, working through the Red Priest Thoros of Myr. And like the Czech Republic, he comes back a little different.

There’s another parallel between man and country. The citizens of the Czech Republic are known for not being particularly religious; in the 2011 census, 34.5% claimed they had no religion, more than any other group save those who didn’t respond to the question at all. However, many do believe in “alternative” religion more commonly just called magic. Beric very much does have a religion, but it’s so outside the norm in Westeros, and it makes him capable of doing so many inexplicable things, that most people see it as magic. How else do you explain dead men coming back to life?
