Andorra: Maester Aemon

If there’s one thing that can be said for Maester Aemon, it’s that he’s the definition of neutrality. As a maester of the Citadel and a of the Night’s Watch, he agreed long ago to forsake any titles or holdings and give himself completely to his duty.

While this would be difficult for almost anyone, it proved especially tricky for Aemon, who was at one point next in line for the Iron Throne. But he gave up chance, deciding instead to devote himself to service.

Much like Aemon, the country of Andorra is dedicated to neutrality. It hasn’t been involved in a war in over 1,000 years. While Andora did *technically* declare war back in World War I, it never sent anyone into battle. Like Aemon, it’s kept itself apart from conflict. While it’s a tricky strategy for a country or a human being, but Andora and Aemon have managed it.

Also of interest is that Andorra has no national bank. Heck, it don’t even have its own currency! This makes me think once more of what Aemon gave up. He could have had the kingship, and all the riches and power that came with it. It must have been temping, but Aemon Targaryen had other priorities.
