Spain: Oberyn Martell
Matching Oberyn with Spain is an obvious choice. There’s just something about the culture that reminds one of Dorne. George R R Martin himself has even stated that Dorne’s culture was loosely inspired by Moorish Spain, and that its politics are a vague reflection of Spain’s own isolation from the rest of its continent.
If Dorne was inspired by Spain, then Oberyn is the perfect poster child. Like Spain, he is adventurous and feisty. He has a try-anything-once attitude that would fit well with citizens known for engaging in bull fights or braving spicy foods.
But just because he’s adventurous, don’t write off Oberyn’s cultured side. Like the Spanish, Oberyn knows how to appreciate the finer things in life. As a young prince, Oberyn was well-educated. Although he would never rule, he had to learn how to represent his House well. Likewise, Spain is known for producing some of the world’s finest actors, athletes and scholars. The country is home to more than a few Nobel Prize laureates.
If Oberyn were alive and chillin’ in Europe, I’m sure he’d feel at home in Spain.
