Latvia: Grey Worm

Everyone loves a good underdog story, and Grey Worm has given us a great one. When we first meet Grey Worm, he’s far from living his best life. He’s an Unsullied soldier, forcibly made a eunuch, trained to be a ruthless killer subject to the whims of his slave master. Heck, Grey Worm isn’t even his real name; all Unsullied soldiers are forced to take on alternate names, another way to deny them personhood.

But as soon as Daenerys frees the Unsullied, everything is different. Grey Worm becomes a shining example of what liberation can do for a man. While he has been shaped by his Unsullied upbringing, he takes on his own interesting personality, forges friendships and even leads Daenerys’ armies.

Like Grey Worm, the country of Latvia has an underdog story. Like the other Baltic states, Latvia spent a great deal of its history ruled over by foreign entities. Despite claiming independence after the second World War, Latvia was taken over again and had to declare independence a second time.

After the country was finally on its own, changes started to come about. While you still can’t call Latvia a modern world power, it’s experiencing a ton of economic growth, despite some setbacks. Like Grey Worm, Latvia is moving on and trying to change for the better.
