Top 10 wildest Game of Thrones fan theories ahead of season 8
By Corey Smith
Arya is dead. The Waif has been wearing her face since season 6.
Would George R.R. Martin go so far as to kill one of the series’ most beloved characters and not tell us? This would be quite a twist for season 8, so let’s lay out the evidence, such as it is.
This theory begins with Arya’s final confrontation with the Waif, a Faceless Man, in season 6. In their final scene together, Arya leads the Waif to a dark room in Braavos. The lights go out, and the next thing we see is Arya confronting Jaqen H’ghar, apparently having killed her enemy.
But did she? This theory suggests that the Waif actually killed Arya, and has been wearing her face ever since. Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that, after Arya’s victory over the Waif, Arya switches from using her left hand to her right, as well as adopting the general cold demeanor of the Waif. So could we be in for a big reveal during season 8?
If this theory is borne out, it gives the Faceless Men a foothold in Westeros, since Arya is a highborn lady who can, if she wants it, gain access to elite circles of power. But it’d be a punch in the gut to learn that the Arya we loved perished two seasons ago, an unceremonious end for such an intriguing and charismatic character.
It’s also almost certainly untrue, but that doesn’t make it any less fun. We’re eager to see what else fans come up with as we wait for the final season!
