Westworld: Will we see Maeve Millay in season 3?
By Ariba Bhuvad
The Westworld season 2 finale brought upon the deaths of many beloved characters, but the biggest question is–will Maeve Millay return?
Westworld season 3 is quite a ways away from premiering but we are already counting down the days until it returns. The season 2 finale scarred us for life as we watched some of our favorite characters succumb to death one by one.
But since this is Westworld, it’s hard to truly accept or believe that all the characters actually died. The character that might have hurt some of us the most is that of Maeve, who died in the attempt to save her daughter. If you’ve been watching the series you know that Maeve’s one and only reason and function revolves around her daughter.
Her sacrifice was a heartbreaking one but it leaves us to wonder whether or not there is room for her character in season 3. In an interview with Newsweek, Newton said she is “desperate” for Maeve to come back to life.
"“If Maeve returns… I’m not excited, I’m desperate. After the end of Season 2, I just was desperate to know. Everything as we know it is shattered at this point. I’m fascinated to see where we start. I feel like, in a way, Season 3 is the beginning.”"
Newton has a deep connection with her character Maeve who experienced a breakdown of her own following the first season. She felt, what we can refer to as, “woke” from the whole experience and has an attachment to Maeve and her character arc.
Playing out Maeve’s death in the season 2 finale of Westworld was a struggle for Maeve who felt the pain of her loss just like a fan would.
"“I had to act her destruction. It was really brutal. I know it’s just a performance, but I felt like I vomited out a lot psychologically and emotionally. I vomited out a lot of resistance.”"
During the course of filming the first two seasons, #MeToo and the Black Lives Matter movements were in full swing and it played a role in how Newton portrayed Maeve. She went on to say that, “Both Black Lives Matter and #MeToo had a profound effect on many, many people and very much me, personally. There was a sense of hopelessness and rage, like repressed grief and rage, and it really all came out.”
In Westworld, hosts are considered to be pretty low on the social hierarchy which mimicked the sentiments of the aforementioned movements. As for season 3, Newton says the real story is yet to come–so prepare yourselves!
