Cersei Lannister: Gone Girl

Cersei Lannister’s favorite movie was surprisingly easy to nail down. Unlike some of the other characters on this list, she has very clear motivations, and despite her ability to occasionally surprise us with a deft political maneuver, I feel that she often wears her emotions on her sleeve. Take her hot temper, for instance, which manifests when she is threatened by Margaery Tyrell or when her brother, Jaime, disappoints her. There’s also her pride, which is easily recognizable in moments when she talks of expectations for her children or her estimations of her own ability to rule the Seven Kingdoms.

As vain as she is, Cersei would probably crave a movie that she thinks reflects her own strengths. 2014’s Gone Girl fits the bill. This movie centers on a betrayed and angry wife who exacts revenge on her cheating husband by (spoiler alert!) faking her own death. Gone Girl’s protagonist is endlessly clever and patient, beautiful and deadly. She’s everything that Cersei has ever seen in the mirror and she even comes out on top in the end!

This film also plays off of Cersei’s deepest insecurities, which would definitely be enough to keep her coming back for rewatch after rewatch. In reality, Cersei feels belittled by the men in her life. Her father, Tywin, views her as a pawn to marry off in the family name. Her husband, Robert, prefers other women over her. Her biggest ally, Jaime, is reduced in her mind after he begins to become a better person. In Gone Girl, though, the protagonist rises above the men in her life to prove that they grossly underestimated her. It’s like Cersei’s wildest fantasies were brought to life.
