Brynden Tully: Braveheart

Brynden Tully, better known as the Blackfish, isn’t the kind of guy you’d expect to gush about his favorite movies, but there’s one film he’d recommend to the right people: Braveheart. It’s exactly his style.

This movie centers on William Wallace, a 13th-century Scottish leader. After Wallace’s wife is publicly murdered for refusing the advances of English soldiers, Wallace leads a party to take down an English garrison as retribution.

The kicks off a longer-lasting conflict between the rebelling Scots and the English. Wallace becomes a man of legend as he begins to amass an outright army. Soon, his cause extends beyond the murder of his wife; his fight is for all of Scotland, and it eventually costs him his life.

Brynden Tully is a fighter himself and would deeply respect Wallace’s undying commitment to his cause. In what is easily the Blackfish’s most memorable scene, he fights to the death defending the ancestral home he refused to abandon. Brynden Tully believed in devotion. The Tully words “Family, Duty, Honor” ran deep in his blood.

The most iconic scene in Braveheart depicts William Wallace being being tortured and sentenced to death. When a judge offers to spare his life if he asks for mercy, Wallace refuses, yelling “Freedom!” instead. The Blackfish would feel that cry in his soul. He’s not a man to express too much emotion, but perhaps that line would be enough to get a man-tear out of him.
