Fire and Blood, the first volume of George R.R. Martin’s two-part history of House Targaryen, is set to drop on November 20. Martin’s German publisher has released the first several pages for previewing. They include all kinds of goodies…if you can read German. For the rest of us, there are pretty pictures are a few pieces that are more easily translatable, courtesy of Reddit. Check out the table of contents:

  • Three Heads of the Dragon — The Government of King Aegon I
  • The Sons of the Dragon
  • Aegon’s Conquest

It looks like Martin is going all in on the detail, as we knew he would. One of those chapters, one of them — “Sons of the Dragon,” about brothers Aenys I and Maegor the Cruel — has already been published as part of a different anthology.

The table of contents provides us with a rough idea of how much time the book will cover. It’ll start with Aegon’s Conquest and end with the Lyseni Spring, which occurred shortly after the end of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which itself will take up a big chunk of the book. That means Volume 2 should cover Crazy Old Aerys and everything he messed up. Personally, I’m most excited to read about war and peace and livestock markets.

You can also check out artwork from artist Doug Wheatley, who also contributed to Martin’s The World of Ice and Fire. Take a look at this illustration Aegon Targaryen on the Iron Throne, with his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys:

There’s also a map of Westeros as it looked in Aegon’s time, sans King’s Landing, as well as images of Meria Martell, the Yellow Toad of Dorne, and of the confrontation between Orys Baratheon and Argilac Durrandon.

Also, should you need reassurance that this book isn’t distracting Martin from finishing The Winds of Winter, know that he wrote the bulk of the book years ago, and it’s not really a novel in any case. Martin himself has dubbed it an “imaginary history” of House Targaryen, and it’s more of a overview rather than a moment-by-moment retelling of what happened.
