Another day, another SPOILER for Avengers 4. It’s barely been 24 hours since a revealing photo from the set of the much-anticipated follow-up to Infinity War leaked online, and here we are again.
If you want to remain as pure as Captain America’s soul, turn back now. If not, SPOILERS ahoy!
Let’s not waste time: Actor Frank Grillo confirmed on the UFC Unfiltered podcast that he would reprise the role of Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in Avengers 4.
If you don’t remember, Crossbones was a villain who appeared in both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. In the latter movie, he blew himself up in a failed attempt to kill Captain America, so you might wonder how in the hell he could return in Avengers 4. Grillo has you covered:
"(Crossbones) makes an appearance in the next Avengers movie, but it’s a flashback. And I’m allowed to say whatever I want because I’m never doing another Marvel movie…Because I’m 117 years old."
According to SyFy Wire, Grillo’s comments about flashbacks support a theory that’s been floating around out there for a while: that Avengers 4 will involve time travel in some way. Various on-set photos have shown the cast members rocking their old-school costumes. Then there’s the post-credits sequence to Ant-Man and the Wasp, which showed Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) stranded in the Quantum Realm. And if there’s any science-y plot device that lends itself to time travel, it’s quantum mechanics.
So what we’re looking at is a scenario where Ant-Man, possibly alongside other heroes, travels back in time and changes things to stop Thanos from snapping away half the universe. The Huffington Post pretty much brought up this possibility to Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed, and he didn’t deny it. “Based on the science that we’ve set up in the first movie and this one, I won’t rule out the possibility, because, again, we are dealing with a time vortex. That could happen.”

Then there’s the fact that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) sent an S.O.S. message to Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) on an old-school pager in the post-credits scene of Infinity War. And we know that the Captain Marvel solo movie, which comes out ahead of Avengers 4, takes place in the ’90s. You see how the pieces are coming together here?
Avengers 4 will hit theaters on May 19 of next year. If things keep going at this rate, we’ll know everything about it by then.
