Unseen Westeros: Watch an artist render the Free City of Tyrosh

The World of Ice and Fire is a sprawling place, more vast than George R.R. Martin could ever hope to fully explore in his Song of Ice and Fire novels. We’ve seen many locations in the books and on Game of Thrones, but they represent just a small fraction of Martin’s world. A group of artists is looking to change that.

From January 23 to January 27, 40 artists — several of whom worked on the show — will display their work at the Umspannwerk in Reinickendorf, Berlin. All of them have created artwork based on far-flung places only whispered about in A Song of Ice and Fire proper. The exhibit is Unseen Westeros, and it looks tremendous:

As you can tell from the video, the artwork is visually stunning, and the best part is, the exhibition is totally free to the public. To help offset the costs of such an enormous undertaking, the organizers have started a Kickstarter campaign, which you can check out here.

We’ve already seen some gorgeous previews of what’s in store, like this rendering of the ancient city of Yeen, on Sothoryos, by artist Tom Hiebler:

Now, five of the artists have teamed up with Adobe to release time-lapse videos showing the creative process in action. Below, check out how artist Claudio Pilia’s rendering of the Free City of Tyrosh came together:

You can see even more time-lapse videos here. Pilia, by the way, helped develop Dragonstone and the Dragonpit as seen on season 7 of Game of Thrones. Unseen Westeros features some top-flight talent.

I love that after seven seasons of Game of Thrones and countless re-reads of A Song of Ice and Fire, I can still be in awe of the magnificence and imagination of George R.R. Martin’s world. Thanks to Unseen Westeros, fans like myself can compare pictures from our imagination to the interpretation of a professional artist. We encourage you to check out that Kickstarter campaign!
