This time 10 years ago, the Star Trek franchise was quiet as a space mouse. There were no TV series in production and the reboot movie series was still a year away. Now, Star Trek is back in a huge way. The film series is still going strong and CBS has no less than three Star Trek shows on the docket: Star Trek: Discovery, an upcoming series revolving around Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), and even a half-hour Star Trek comedy from one of the Rick and Morty writers. Then there’s The Orville, a loving tribute/good-natured spoof of Star Trek from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. Star Trek is having such a moment, even shows that have nothing to do with it have something to do with it.
The second season of The Orville premieres on Fox on December 30. Fox has dropped a new trailer. Check it out:
The first season of The Orville was marketed as a broad Star Trek parody, which MacFarlane thinks misrepresented the show. The new trailer makes The Orville look like…well, Star Trek with some jokes thrown in.
Apparently not, although given how hard CBS is pursuing the series, maybe they should be. In addition to all the other Star Trek stuff it’s doing, the network is also producing four Trek-themed short films (called Short Treks, ha ha), including one from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon. Chabon’s short, called Calypso, is set 1000 years after Discovery, meaning it’s set later down the Star Trek timeline than any film or TV show yet produced. There’s a new trailer for that, too:
