Variety reports that Marvel superheroes Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) are getting their own limited series, to premiere on Disney’s as-yet-untitled streaming service. Malcolm Spellman, who served as a writer and executive producer on Fox’s Empire, is writing the series.* The as-yet-untitled show (lot of that going around at Disney these days) is the first of multiple Marvel limited shows; Disney is also planning shows revolving around Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).

The series will reportedly be six to eight episodes in length, have a large budget, and will be produced by Marvel Studios and MCU head Kevin Feige. That means, unlike Daredevil, which just aired its third season on Netflix, The Adventures of Falcon and the Winter Soldier will likely have a much deeper connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Netflix recently canceled Iron Fist and Luke Cage, two shows that formed part of a new televised Marvel Universe, along with Daredevil and Jessica Jones. It looks like Disney is taking the TV reins back.

Back to The Winter Soldier and Falcon and Friends, it’s interesting that Disney is pairing these two together. In the comics, both of them have worn the mantle of Captain America. The Winter Soldier (aka Bucky Barnes) took up the shield during the Death of Captian America storyline, and Falcon became Captain America when the original Cap retired. With rumors that Chris Evans’ Captain America may not make it out of Avengers 4 alive, is this Disney’s way of following that event up?

There’s no word on when Falcon-Soldier-Man-Woman may air, but it won’t be before Disney’s streaming service goes live sometime in 2019.

*FYI: Malcolm Spellman was originally working with Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss on Confederate, a controversial HBO show that is looking more dead by the minute.
