After snagging an Emmy for her work on Westworld, what are Thandie Newton’s chances of continuing the streak at the 2019 Golden Globes?

Westworld has been an incredible journey for Thandie Newton, and this year at the Emmy’s proved just how much when she won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. But now, with the Golden Globes just two months away, could she continue her streak?

Well, we would certainly like to think so and while the competition is fierce, so is Newton and if this last season on Westworld proved anything, it’s that she is comparable to the best of the best in her category which includes Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba.

Golden Globe nominations have not yet been announced, but the great folks over at Gold Derby have started to analyze and predict what Newton’s chances are and where they believe she falls in their ranks.

According to Gold Derby, If Newton is to win the Golden Globe, she would be the second black actress to win it, with the first being almost 50 years ago. Gail Fisher of Mannix won in this category in 1971 and since then only a handful of black women have been nominated in this category.

Fisher pulled of an Emmy/Globe win, and Uzo Aduba of Orange Is The New Black almost followed in her stead in 2015 but lost to The Affair’s Maura Tierney that year. But if anyone can pull this off, we are confident that it will be Newton.

Gold Derby also pointed out that besides playing Maeve on Westworld, Newton has some additional aspects to her that could aid in her victory:

"“She’s British — very appealing to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — and a movie star whom the Globes has yet to recognize.”"

Currently, the race (at least in predictions) is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Alex Borstein in first place with Newton in second. Considering the other potential actresses that could be nominated, that’s still a huge accomplishment in terms of predictions and stats, so we will take it!

We will certainly know more when Golden Globe nominations are announced Dec. 6th, so until then hang tight and send positive vibes to Newton, because without her, Westworld would not be the same.
