A Japanese island has disappeared and the internet is blaming Godzilla
By Dan Selcke
Esanbe Hanakita Kojima is a small, uninhabited island off the northern coast of Japan…or it was until recently, when it disappeared from the map. Scientists don’t know what happened; did the low-lying island sink under rising sea levels? Did it just erode itself beneath the ocean? The experts aren’t sure.
Amateurs, on the other hand, are pretty certain this is the work of Godzilla, the giant mutant lizard who’s been terrorizing Japan ever since his debut appearance in 1954’s Godzilla.
You can judge for yourself whether their arguments hold water:
It’s possible the waters swallowed Esanbe Hanakita Kojima after Godzilla and friends fell in the ocean and raised the sea level:
The only two words we need:
In all seriousness, because this is a serious post, it is a little alarming that an island has vanished, and not just because of the ongoing sea level rise due to climate change. The Japanese government is uncomfortable with it because, even though no one was living on Esanbe Hanakita Kojima, Japan used it to mark its territorial waters in the Northern Territories, an area to which Russia also lays claim. According to international law, nations can only claim waters around islands that are visible above the surface of the sea at high tide. With Esanbe Hanakita Kojima gone, Japan stands to lose around 500 meters of territorial waters.
And also: fear Godzilla.
