Check out the latest trailer for Alita: Battle Angel
By Dan Selcke
James Cameron, the guy behind Titanic and Avatar, is teaming up with Robert Rodriguez, the guy behind El Mariachi and Sin City, to make Alita: Battle Angel, an adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s classic 1990 manga. Hollywood hasn’t had a great track record adapting manga, with the results being mediocre at best (Ghost in the Shell) or terrible at worst (Dragonball Evolution). That said, Cameron and Rodriguez have pretty impressive pedigrees and are working closely with Kishiro to bring his cyberpunk vision to life. You can judge for yourself whether they’re on the right track based on this new trailer:
I’m getting all kinds of uncanny valley feelings from Alita herself (Rosa Salazar), what with her big anime eyes, but that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. She’s an amnesiac cyborg warrior, after all; there’s a lot of weird baked in.
Rodriguez is directing and Cameron executive producing/cowriting. Alita: Battle Angel was originally going to drop into theaters this December but has now been pushed back to February 14, Valentine’s Day.
Also in trailers, there’s a good chance that you’ve already seen the one for Detective Pikachu, the live-action Pokémon movie starring Ryan Reynolds as the series’ famous electric rat. And if you haven’t, you should, because it is odd in the extreme:
It’s not right to call this a dark and gritty Pokémon movie, but it certainly looks darker and grittier than I ever expected a Pokémon movie to look. I…think I want to see it?
But that’s a me problem. The teaser trailers for Toy Story 4 offer simpler pleasures:
Detective Pikachu is out May 10, for better or worse. Toy Story 4 drops June 21. 2019 is gonna be an interesting year for movies, and for TV.
