Former MMA fighter-turnedactor Gina Carano has joined the cast of The Mandalorian, per The Hollywood Reporter. The Mandalorian is the first-ever live-action Star Wars series, so it’s not a bad gig to get. It’ll air on Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+, sometime in 2019.
Carano has a few films and TV shows under her belt, including turns in Fast and the Furious 6 and the first Deadpool movie, where she kicked Colossus’ ass as Angel Dust, even pulling off an awesome superhero landing (it’s hard on the knees).
Carino joins Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell), who’s playing the lead. Iron Man director Jon Favreau is executive producer, showrunner and script-writer.
We don’t know a ton of details about the show yet, but Disney has released the all-star lineup of directors:
- Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels)
- Deborah Chow (Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Fear the Walking Dead, and Mr. Robot)
- Rick Famuyiwa (The Wood, Dope)
- Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of Ron
- Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok)
I’m particularly excited about Dave Filoni. Since 2008, Filoni has written, directed, produced, and even lent his voice to shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. His crowning achievement is creating fan favorite character Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein). There’s no one at Disney more knowledgable about Star Wars than him, so he could be a great asset.
We’ll learn more about The Mandalorian — and about Disney’s second live-action Star Wars show, a prequel to Rogue One — the closer we get to the launch of Disney+. It’s going to be a Star Wars sort of 2019.
