Avatar: The Last Airbender is having a bit of a moment. The original Nickelodeon show, a kid-friendly animated epic, has many devoted fans whose enthusiasm was only slightly dimmed by M. Night Shyamalan’s disastrous 2010 live-action movie adaptation. But now, original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are coming back to make their own live-action series remake for Netflix, taking some veiled shots at Shyamalan’s movie in the process. “We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender,” they said in a statement. “We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast.”
Around the same time, director Josh Mabie teamed with Re:Anime, which makes live-action short films adaptations of animated series, to re-imagine a beloved scene from the original show: the climactic fire duel between royal siblings Zuko and Azula. With Yoshi Sudarso as Prince Zuko, Nikki SooHoo as Azula and Yasmin Kassim as Katara, the project is looking swell:
Now, Re:Anime has put out a teaser for the film, and it is — forgive the pun, it’s just too obvious not to make — fire:
Is this Mabie and company’s coy way of auditioning for the Netflix show? Is it working? Whatever the case, I’m interested in seeing the completed film, hopefully coming to an internet near you in the immediate future.
