Xfinity customers: Enjoy HBO for free this Thanksgiving weekend
By Dan Selcke
The United States is about to embark on the Thanksgiving holiday, a five-day long binge of food, drink, family and food. And also there is television. The long holiday weekend, which for many begins tomorrow, is the perfect time to catch up on shows you’ve missed or rewatch shows you love. Knowing this, Xfinity is offering its customers free access to HBO starting Wednesday, November 21 through Sunday, November 25. So if you somehow haven’t yet seen Game of Thrones, now is the time to binge it ahead of the April premiere of the final season. And if you have seen Game of Thrones, now is the perfect time to gather your family round the TV for a viewing of “The Rains of Castamere,” to remind everyone how bad a feast can really get, so stop squabbling and eat your turkey.
The timing of the free preview weekend dovetails nicely with HBO revving up the marketing machine for Game of Thrones season 8. With filming in the can and editing well underway, the network is teasing the final six episodes with a series of posters and clips. There’s also a hashtag, because you’ve gotta have a hashtag:
In any case, HBO will want as many new viewers as it can get in the months leading up to the premiere, although you have to wonder if a free viewing weekend will convince anyone who hasn’t already heard of Game of Thrones — and it’s hard to believe there are many left — that it’s only now worth watching. The buzz around the show is so loud it kind of markets itself. But for the few who will watch it for the first time this holiday weekend, have a nice trip. And don’t watch “The Mountain and the Viper” on a full stomach.
