Infinity War coming to Netflix for Christmas, but for how long?
By Corey Smith
Good news, Marvel fans: Netflix is bringing Avengers: Infinity War to the streaming service on December 25, Christmas Day. It’s a lovely gift from Disney, which owns Marvel Studios, but you’d best read the card, because there’s some fine print. Per Variety, Disney’s deal with Netflix expires in 2020, and the streamer doesn’t have the right to stream anything Disney puts out in 2019. So it’s great that Netflix is getting Infinity War, but that might be the last Marvel movie to ever show up there.
That’s because Disney is launching its own streaming service — Disney+ — late in 2019, and when that happens, it won’t want people to be able to see any of its movies (or any of the movies made by the many, many studios it owns) anywhere else. So we may get access to Infinity War now (along with Star Wars and Pixar movies and so on), but only so we’ll be willing to pay Disney for the privilege of watching it on Disney+ later. This is a most complicated Christmas gift.
Disney+ will have more than just movies. It will also feature original series, including Star Wars show The Mandalorian, which will star Game of Thrones alum Pedro Pascal in the lead role; an untitled Rogue One prequel starring Diego Luna; and a series starring Tom Hiddleston as Loki, his Marvel Cinematic Universe character.
But that’s in the future. For now, we can just enjoy the superhero beatdown. Debuting in April of this year, Avengers: Infinity War made over $2 billion, making it fourth highest-grossing movie of all time. Marvel movie chief Kevin Feige has promised a trailer for its sequel, which currently is known only as Avengers 4, before the end of the year.
