Netflix cannot, will not, shall not be stopped. Hot on the heels of the announcement that its putting together a bunch of shows based on the works of children’s author Roald Dahl, the streaming giant announced today that it’s making a live-action version of beloved ’90s anime Cowboy Bebop, about a bunch of stylish space bounty hunters cruising around the galaxy getting into trouble and looking good doing it.
We don’t know much about the show yet, although the same Netflix Twitter account noted that original show creator Shinichiro Watanabe will consult, and the pilot episode will be written by Thor: Ragnarok screenwriter Chris Yost.
This announcement comes days after Netflix dropped trailers for a bunch of anime offerings coming in the spring, including the streaming debut of Neon Genesis Evangelion, another classic ’90s jam. Netflix is going all in on this market.
Now, live-action versions of anime series have traditionally been pretty rough. Remember the live-action Dragonball movie? If you’d forgotten, I’m sorry to remind you:
This won’t be the first time Netflix has made a live-action anime adaptation, either. They released a middling Death Note movie in 2017 (with Willem Dafoe playing a demon, naturally) and a Fullmetal Alchemist film earlier this year. Neither of those made much of a splash, but the company has all the money in the world and a yen for anime fans, so here we are.

Maybe this will be the one that breaks through for Netflix. For those who have seen the show, who should play Jet, Spike, Faye and Edward? Can Willem Dafoe be involved again?
