At the WiC Club: “Fixing” Game of Thrones—The Rise of the Sparrows

facebooktwitterreddit

By now you’ve probably heard us talk about the WiC Club, a Patreon page where we shoot videos, give away prizes, talk drunkenly with members on camera, and more, all in celebration of Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire.

We also write extra articles beyond what you’ll see on WiC, including several in an ongoing series called “‘Fixing’ Game of Thrones.” In this series, we look at what we see as flaws in the show and offer possible fixes, fully cognizant that we are randos on the internet without IMDb credits, unlike the hard-working folks who make this show. It’s all in good fun; if we didn’t love the show we wouldn’t be here, but there’s no show so perfect it can’t withstand some healthy criticism, right?

Anyway, we’ve already done articles on Ramsay Bolton’s infamous “20 good men” plan and the murder of Jon Snow. This week: we hit another arguably rough spot in the show’s fifth season: the rise of the sparrows in King’s Landing. To make a long story short, while we eventually got on board with the sparrow plotline, their introduction lacked context; for a long while, we didn’t really know who these people were about and why they were doing what they were doing. Also, to this day I’m confused by what exactly Littlefinger was playing at when he offered Lady Olenna “a handsome young man” following the arrest of her grandchildren.

In this article, we untangle these questions and try to offer some answers. If you’re interested, feel free to stop by the WiC Club. We’re also running a caption contest at the moment; the winner gets an Iron Throne Christmas ornament. Come on down and have a look around!
