Westworld: Showrunners reveal frightening inspiration behind series

How does it make you feel that Westworld was inspired by real-life events?
Westworld is an emotionally jarring series, and its narrative illustrates a world where robots become conscious and revolt against humans. With just a few days left before season 2 comes out on Blu-Ray and DVD, the Westworld showrunners have something frightening to share.
The series is inspired by true events. Uh, say what? In an exclusive clip on Digital Spy, the Nolan duo revealed what exactly from the real world went into creating Westworld. One of the things that Lisa Joy spoke about was the concept of privacy, the meaning it holds, and how it can be exploited.
In the short clip, Nolan makes a mention of how technology companies have questionable processes that poke and prod a bit too much. He believes they are taking things a bit too far and impinging on our privacy. Based on how things have been, it’s not a very outlandish statement.
"“What technology companies are doing right now [that] is so insidious is they’re capitalizing on our emotional relationships to get a clear sense of who we are.”"
If you think about it, we post our entire lives online. Everyone knows where we are, who we’re with, who we love, where we work, etc. And companies often use that to their advantage to profit. It’s actually quite scary if you sit down to think about it, right?
So what does Westworld, Delos, and this world have to do with it? Nolan states that in the same way tech companies use our personal information for their own gain, so does Delos. In season 2, we learned that Delos is collecting visitor DNA and eventually it will be used to make more money for Delos and the tech they create.
