21. Mickey Smith

One of the greatest Doctor Who companions of all-time, at least secondary companions anyway, is Mickey Smith.

When Mickey Smith first came onto the scene, he was your run of the average mill, pretty dull and boring, extremely clingy, boyfriend of Rose Taylor.

Now Mickey is actually a guy who deserves some sympathy. He really ended up getting the raw end of the deal when it came to life with The Doctor. When nine showed up, Rose ran off with him on many adventures, leaving Mickey completely worried with sick at what had happened to her.

Things didn’t improve too much for him even when he started to travel with Rose during the tenth Doctor’s era, and when it became very clear that Rose’s heart belonged with another, a.k.a The Doctor, their time together was over and the two split apart.

Now if that was how things ended for Mickey, he would never have made this list. But his adventures after he finished being a companion of The Doctor is what secured him a place on the list of greatest Doctor Who companions of all time.

During the episode “The End of Time,” when David Tennant revisits his old companions. We learn that Mickey never returned to his old life. Instead, he decided to join UNIT and fight the aliens that threatened to wreak havoc on Earth. Not only that, but we learn that he eventually got married as well. To the one and only Martha Jones, another companion of The Doctor, whom you guessed, might appear on this list of greatest Doctor Who companions of all time.
