30 greatest Doctor Who companions of all time
By Callum Gunn
27. Jo Grant
Another member of UNIT, Josephine Grant, forever known as Jo Grant, was a companion of the third Doctor.
Assigned to the Doctor by “The Brigadier,” who you might come across on this list some time later #NoSpoilers, Jo Grant was at first a laboratory assistant before meeting The Doctor and becoming a travelling companion.
Jo Grant helped The Doctor in one-off missions and after the exile on Earth was finally lifted. Mainly knowing The Doctor in his third regeneration phase, she did have adventures with the second Doctor, and even eleven as well. There is also a small connection to the very first Doctor, but not huge one, that involved her travelling or anything like that. She monitored him on a screen and that’s all. Jo eventually left both UNIT and The Doctor when she married Professor Clifford Jones.
When we first met Jo, it’s a wonder that she became the companion she did. Her first encounter with the Time Lord ended in disaster when she mistook what was a very important scientific experiment for a fire and doused it out with a fire extinguisher. First impressions of her were, understandably, rather low.
But, despite the first encounter mess, Jo went on and proved her worth, and even bested The Master and rescued The Doctor. If we didn’t have Jo Grant, we would have had no Doctor.
