Netflix is making a show based on The Witcher, Andrzej Sapkowski’s popular series of fantasy novels that were turned into an even more popular series of video games. Henry Cavill, best known as Superman in the recent D.C. movies, plays the lead role of Geralt of Rivia, “a mutated monster hunter [who struggles] to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.” Or at least, that’s how Netflix puts it in its official series description, helpfully shared by showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich.

Hissrich is very vocal online, often posting updates about the show as production gets underway. She seems incredibly passionate about her job, which bodes well for Witcher fans. Just the other day, she apparently decided she couldn’t take another day on set in plainclothes and really got into the spirit of things:
Sometimes, you get tired of being behind the scenes.

So this is like if Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss showed up to that set in plate mail. Does it make the show better? Worse? I don’t know, but it has my attention. I hope Henry Cavill ends up growing a beard for the actual show, though. I played my share of The Witcher 3 and it’s weird seeing a clean-shaven Geralt. Fan artists seem to agree:
There’s no firm release date for The Witcher yet, but it’s expected to drop on Netflix sometime next year. Click here to see the cast list.
