Game of Thrones is the second most popular show on Reddit for 2018, despite not airing new episodes

This may come as a shock to you, but Game of Thrones is a very popular show. How popular? Despite not airing a new episode since August of 2017, the HBO drama was the second most buzzed about TV show on Reddit in 2018. Reddit measures buzz based on the number of unique comments, and the Game of Thrones subreddit racked up 7.7 million. That’s over 640k comments per month for a show that wasn’t even on the air, and keep in mind that this total doesn’t count the popular Song of Ice and Fire and free folk subreddits. Not bad.

And yet, another show did finally topple Game of Thrones from Reddit’s top shelf, the first time that’s happened since Thrones premiered in 2011. That show is RuPaul’s Drag Race, which technically had two seasons this year: a normal one and an All Stars special with returning cast members (and there’s another All Stars season about to start). Here’re the full rankings:

Incidentally, neither Rick and Morty nor Stranger Things had any new episodes this year, and they still made the top 8. Fans on Reddit are fans indeed.

Anyway, the final season of Game of Thrones will air in April of 2019, and Reddit expects it to easily pull ahead with around 2 million comments coming in every month. You may have won the battle, RuPaul, but the war is far from over.

For now, things are quiet, doubly so since Game of Thrones won’t be eligible for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards, not having aired new episodes within the eligibility period. Now’s your chance, Bojack Horseman!
