Just last week, Netflix cancelled Daredevil, a popular show about the Marvel superhero. That capped off a couple months of rough news for Netflix’s slate of Marvel shows; before DaredevilLuke Cage got the axe. Before that, it was Iron Fist. While we don’t know exactly why Netflix has canceled these high-profile shows, odds are it has something to do with rising tensions between Netflix and Disney, which owns the rights to these characters. Disney, you see, is making its own streaming service, Disney+, due out next year, and probably doesn’t like the idea of its characters appearing on a competitor’s service.

The cancellation of Daredevil has hit fans hardest, since it was the first of Netflix’s Marvel shows and still the most popular. Is there a chance the show could continue on Disney+? Star Charlie Cox didn’t rule out the possibility when asked for comment, but as Variety reports, if it’s going to happen, it won’t be for a while. A clause in the original deal between Netflix and Disney precludes characters from any cancelled Marvel show from appearing outside Netflix for two years after the fall of the axe. So while it’s possible Cox could again don Daredevil’s red suit, it wouldn’t be until 2020 at the earliest, and we can imagine Disney wanting to retool the character during the gap year.

Jessica Jones, the second of Netflix’s Marvel shows, is in an interesting position here. It’s the only one of the first four shows not to be cancelled, although fans must be bracing themselves. Still, it’s set to air a third season on Netflix sometime in 2019. That means that if Disney had a mind to make a second season of The Defenders, it couldn’t do it until 2021 at the earliest, assuming Disney cancels Jessica Jones next year and/or doesn’t want to have a second season without her. Then there’s The Punisher, which was not made under the terms of the original Netflix-Disney deal. Anything could happen with that one.

Basically, the Marvel shows aren’t in a good place. Things are changing in the streaming world.
