When it was announced that director Guillermo del Toro and actor Ron Pearlman would not be returning for the new Hellboy movie, I had serious doubts it would even get off the ground. However, after watching David Harbour (Sheriff Hopper from Stranger Things) take on the role of the cat-loving demon spawn in the film’s official trailer, all my doubts are gone. Check it out:
Originally meant to be a sequel to 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, this version is now an R-rated reboot of the franchise. Neil Marshall (the guy behind “Blackwater” and “Watchers on the Walls” from Game of Thrones) directs.
In the original movies, Jon Hurt played Hellboy’s adoptive father, Trevor Bruttenholm. Hurt died in 2017. To fill his shoes, Lionsgate has Deadwood star Ian McShane. Milla Jovovich will play the film’s main villain, Nimue the Queen of Blood, a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind. The film also features Brian Gleeson as Merlin, so they’re going for a whole Arthurian legend angle with the bad guys.
