Earlier this year, AMC aired The Terror, an icebound period horror show based on the book of the same name by Dan Simmons, a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin’s lost expedition to the Arctic in the mid-19th century. The show was a moody, textured, spooky delight, and AMC soon renewed it for a second season.

But season 2 won’t be set in the northern ice. The first season wrapped up that story. Instead, it will revolve around an “uncanny spectre” haunting members of a Japanese-American community during World War II, whether they’re fighting in the Pacific or confined to internment camps on the mainland.

Now, AMC has announced that Star Trek’s own George Takei is coming aboard as a series regular for the second season. He’ll play Yamato-san, a “former fishing captain and community elder.” Takei himself was held in two Japanese internment camps as a child, so he’s also acting as a consultant to “ensure the accuracy of historical events and storytelling.”

In AMC’s press release, season 2 showrunner Alexander Woo calls Japanese internment a “blemish on the nation’s conscience” and that his new season will communicate the terror of the camps “in a way that feels modern and relevant to the present moment,” probably referring to the Trump administration’s internment of migrants, something that got a lot of press this year. Based on the bold, evocative first season, we’re really looking forward to this.
