Why Titans was the best superhero show of 2018
4. The well-written interpersonal relationships
The slow and steady pace of the plot helps establish rich relationships between the team members. Garfield and Rachel’s friendship develops because they both have a “monster” inside them they sometimes can’t control, although there’s a part of them that enjoys unleashing it. Both of their journeys involve accepting this darker part of themselves, and it binds them together. Dick Grayson has a similar issue, as he’s unable to stop himself from becoming violent whenever he dons the Robin suit. While Garfield and Dick haven’t spoken about this in depth, Rachel and Dick have.
Rachel and Dick’s relationship is my favorite. They’re both so young, but have so much weight on their shoulders. It’s clear that Dick is slowly becoming a father figure of sorts to Rachel. Their dynamic is great and I hope we see more of it in season 2.
Kory Anders is something of a protective mother figure for the team, with Dick playing the part of the dad. The two of them even have conversations out of earshot of Rachel and Gar where they worry for the younger members’ well-being. This dynamic is sometimes played for laughs, but it also underlines the idea that the team is becoming a family, and will eventually have to rely on each other like family members do. The cherry on the top is that Dick and Kory do pursue a very brief sorta-kinda relationship — the fans are rooting for them!
