Expect the Unexpected

So cast members have outlined the general shape of the season to come, but what about the ending? Fans have invested a lot of time and energy into this show over the years. How will it leave them?

As before, no one gives us specifics, but some common themes do emerge. For example, do you think you’ve figured out how this story will wrap up? Don’t count on it.

  • Hannah Murray (Gilly): “I knew to expect the unexpected. Anything that felt too obvious to me I knew was not going to be what [happened]. So there were certain things where I was like, ‘Well it can’t be that but I don’t know what it is going to be.’ It’s not like a fairytale happy ending by any means at all and I think it’s a really wonderful final season. I’m really excited for people to get to see it.”
  • Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister): “I think it’s going to be the best season of television anyone has ever seen. It takes you to a place that you never saw coming, that I didn’t see coming and just, yeah, be prepared. It’s a fun ride…“There are no better writers in television than Dan Weiss and David Benioff. They ended it brilliantly. Better than I could have imagined and you people are in for it.”
  • Turner: “For me – without giving anything away, I guess – I was satisfied with how unpredictable the show’s ending really is. People have come up with so many fan theories about how it’s going to end, and who will end up where, and who will end up with who. It really is so unpredictable the way that it ends up. I’m very satisfied with that, and I think that the fans will be satisfied with that, too. Well, we hope. We’ll see!”
  • Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm): “I really like it, but I was really surprised. I didn’t expect it. I didn’t see it coming.”
  • Joe Dempsie (Gendry): “I’m sure David and Dan don’t pay too much attention to people’s theories and speculation there is all over the internet, but it would be a bit of an anti-climax if a well-popularised theory turned out to be the way it ended. There’s many pitfalls and I think they really have achieved that with this. It’s an ending I don’t think many people will be expecting and I think, on reflection, people will really, really enjoy.”

I’m down for an unexpected ending. I want to be surprised. But not everyone likes surprises, which brings us to our next topic…
