American Gods is a Starz show based on the novel of the same name by geek maven Neil Gaiman, about a brewing battle between the fading gods of the old world and the new gods of technology, media and authority that dominate modern life. The first season was stylish and moody if a little stretched out, with solid lead performances from Ian McShane (as the mysterious Mr. Wednesday) and Ricky Whittle (as Shadow, a normal guy caught up in this god-vs-god craziness). However, production on the second season has been troubled, with Starz cycling through a couple of showrunners and Gillian Anderson, who played the god Media in the first season, leaving the show. Despite its issues, season 2 will premiere March 10, and the trailer doesn’t look half-bad:
To build more hype, American Gods has released a few minutes of footage, probably from the premiere episode. It doesn’t make quite as good an impression. Watch below:
That’s Bruce Langley as the Technical Boy, vaguely the god of information technology, and Crispin Glover as Mr. World, vaguely the god of globalization, meeting in a garage to discuss big important matters, vaguely. Crispin Glover is doing his Crispin Glover thing, being creepy and intense, although I don’t like his note about this being “a time for preparation.” American Gods isn’t a very long book, and the first season already felt like it was marking time. Let’s speed things up.
