Droids old and new to feature in Disney’s The Mandalorian

Late this year, Disney is going to debut Disney+, its very own streaming service. With competitors like Netflix and Hulu in the running, it could be difficult to break into this crowded market, but if anyone can do it, it’s Disney, particularly when they have a live-action Star Wars show in the pipeline. The Mandalorian will be set after Return of the Jedi but before The Force Awakens, and star Game of Thrones Pedro Pascal as a lone gunfighter on the outer reaches of the galaxy. We still don’t know a ton about it, but executive producer Jon Favreau shared a little tidbit over the holidays:

Diehard Star Wars fans may recognize that as IG-88, an assassin droid that showed up among a group of bounty hunters Darth Vader hired to find the Millennium Falcon after the Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back:

And now he’s on the set of The Mandalorian, which makes sense. Mandalore is the home world of bounty hunters Jango and Boba Fett, after all, so it’s only natural that other professionals would be in the mix.

And IG-88 may not be the only rock-em-sock-em droid joining he cast. Jason Ward of Making Star Wars, a fansite that reliably gets good intel, sketched something he saw on set:

This is less reliable than an Instagram post from the executive producer, but damn, I hope it’s real. An RD-2D-type with bionic legs and arms and a smacking stick? I would watch that. Combine this with the show’s very interesting cast, and I’m getting more excited aboutThe Mandalorian by the second.
