Bird Box and Stranger Things producers adapting Shadow and Bone books for Netflix

In the wake of Game of Thrones, TV adaptations of fantasy book series are all the rage, with Amazon dipping into J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Showtime taking a multi-pronged approached to Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicle series and Netflix adapting C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia. But because this is Netflix, one literary adaptation isn’t enough. Deadline reports that the streaming service is now making Shadow and Bone, an adaptation of the books set in author Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse.

We’re talking about two series of books here. The first, a trilogy, follows orphan Alina Starkov, who lives in the Russia-inspired kingdom of Ravka. Her country is divided in two by an area of darkness called the Shadow Fold. Nasty, flesh-eating monsters live there. It is bad. Alina discovers a power that could help, but forces both human and inhuman work against her.

A separate pair of books — Six of Crows and its sequel — are set in the same world but in a different place and time. Netflix’s show will draw from both.

There’s some big talent involved in Shadow and Bone. It’s created, written and executive produced by Eric Heisserer. He wrote and produced both the excellent 2016 sci-fi movie Arrival and Bird Box, the Netflix movie currently inspiring everyone to walk around blind.

Also on board as a producer is Shawn Levy, who also produces Stranger Things. It’s hard to know what will become a hit, particularly in a marketplace as crowded as Netflix, but the stars could align for this one.
