Sophie Turner explains seven seasons of Sansa Stark’s hair

Just when you thought you were out, it pulls you back in. Kit Harington’s luxurious hair — now clipped, like the wings of a beautiful bird in a gilded cage — is back in the news, as Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) tells InStyle how the cast of Game of Thrones enjoyed teasing Harington about his obsession with his hair. “He probably takes the most care of his hair out of like everyone on the show I know,” she said. “He’s obsessed. Before red carpets, you would always see him scrunching the ends of his curls to make sure they’re perfect. We all take the piss out on him for that.”

Well, when the fanbase is as obsessed with your hair as you are, maybe ensuring your curls are perfect is time well spent.

Turner also talked about her own hair routine for seasons 7 and 8. She keeps her hair “icy blonde” now, and wears an intricate red wig on the show. However, during the first six seasons, the actress would dye her hair from blonde to red during filming, then back to blonde in the offseason. Because of this, her hair was severely damaged and she was warned the continued dye-jobs would cause her hair to fall out.

And it gets weirder:

"Well, for the first few seasons I was allowed to wash my hair because I was an aristocratic young girl. Towards season 5 they started asking me to not wash my hair and it was really disgusting. Now I wear [a] wig so I can wash my hair whenever I want, which is nice. But yes, for a couple of years I was living with pretty greasy hair."

During those dark days, Turner’s hair would get “really itchy,” and the snow machines used on set would blow “little snow paper particles that would get stuck in the grease. It was disgusting.” Yikes.

Still, neither she nor Harington had the longest hair routine on set. “t was probably Emilia because she needed a bald cap, a wig, and then had intricate design on the wig. Actually, mine seemed to take longer this season — I don’t know why. Wait, it’s because she’s dyed her hair blonde! But, it’s mainly the people with the wigs that take the longest.

Sansa’s hair has gone through many changes over the seasons, with a new one spotted in the latest teaser trailer. Turner talked about the symbolism of it all:

"It’s true, there’s definitely a correlation. For so long, Sansa’s hair changed season by season depending on who was influencing her. The first few episodes she was a Northerner in Winterfell and took after her mother with a simple braid down the back. Then when she went to King’s Landing it was a big, decadent halo that was very much like what the Queen wore. With Littlefinger, she dyes her hair black and wears all black. Then she goes back to Winterfell and returns to her mother’s hair."

And that brings us to now. “She created her own identity in season 7 and that kind of runs through to season 8. She’s chosen how she wants her hair to be, and she’s finally the leader and influencer instead of being influenced by everyone else.”

Speaking about the teaser trailer, Turner came up with her own theory for why Sansa, Arya, and Jon’s hair all had the slicked-back look:

"There’s been some kind of explosion in Winterfell. Suddenly, all of our hair just went ‘whoop’ and stayed there. The grease really helped. Actually, it’s all just grease. They haven’t washed their hair for so long that they just brush it back with their hands and it stays."

And there you have it: a season 8 mystery has been solved. Game of Thrones returns to HBO for its eighth and final season on April 14.
