Star Wars: Episode XI star John Boyega teases “something visually crazy” with cryptic photo

The set of Star Wars: Episode IX has been radio silent of late. Sure, we get bits of rumors here and there, but for the most part, director J.J. Abrams has kept a tight lid on the leaks that tend to plague big movie projects.

Enter actor John Boyega (Finn), who recently shared a photo of his hands, covered in soot or dirt and blood. And it comes with a juicy tease.

"Great working day on set!! The whole team pushed themselves today to achieve something visually crazy! I’ve had many moments of shock on set but not like today and I can’t wait until you know why."

The hashtag Boyega signs off with — FN2187 — is the stormtrooper designation given to Finn when he was in the First Order. Could this mean that Finn once again attempts to infiltrate the First Order, but this time as a stormtrooper? If so, it would mark the third movie in a row where he has had to get in with the bad guys to help the good guys.

Boyega has posted other things from the set. Here’s a quick video from this past December of him sporting a new jacket with a huge bluescreen behind him. Notice how he rotates and seems to be talking to someone. That is usually the mark of a hologram communication.

Regardless of Finn’s role in the film, fans are still eager for an Episode IX trailer, and rumor has it that Disney has one all queued up and ready to go at any moment. But with the Star Wars Celebration heading to Chicago in April, there’s probably a very good chance we won’t get to see any footage until then.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters December 20.
