Some time back, artist Sven Sauer, inspired by The World of Ice and Fire companion book from George R.R. Martin, Elio M. García Jr. and Linda Antonsson, got the bright idea to call up artists who had worked on HBO’s Game of Thrones and ask them to render parts of Martin’s far-flung fantasy world that had never shown up on TV, or even in the Song of Ice and Fire books. The result was Unseen Westeros, a Song of Ice and Fire-themed art exhibit that went down in Germany this past weekend, in an abandoned electric transformer station in a suburb of Reinickendorf.
The exhibit drew fans from as far away as Bolivia, and while you might not have been able to go yourself, we can at least gather some images and video to show you how cool this exhibit was.
“I thought the book had a lot of potential,” Sauer told The Washington Post, “so I got on the phone and drummed up artists (who’d worked on the show) worldwide to ask if they wanted to show this book visually.” Good call.
“This is an incredible gathering of fans,” said visitor Marcus Roberts. “It’s not just about the core battles or the awesome dragons or the amazing political plots and twists. It’s about the characters and the richness of the story.”
Elio Garcia himself also weighed in. “We’re so happy that there are these mad people, these talented people who are so inspired by our work.
I haven’t heard much about what, if anything, the artists plan to do with their work now that the exhibit has wrapped up. Any chance they could take this on the road? I know I’d love to see it.
If you’d like to see more, the @GoTlikeLocation Twitter account has some terrific images. Thanks to all the artists who participated!
