Writing has begun on Showtime’s Kingkiller Chronicle series
By Ariba Bhuvad
The Kingkiller Chronicle is a series of fantasy novels written by Patrick Rothfuss, about a red-headed genius-musician-ninja-sexgod named Kvothe on a quest to discover the truth behind the murder of his parents. About three years ago, it was announced that the fantasy story would be turned into a TV series, a few films, and even a video game. In the time since that announcement, there wasn’t much discussed or revealed regarding the project. However, this week at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Showtime president Gary Levine had an update for TV Guide:
"We have a group of writers working away and writing the stories and the scripts, and we’re working with them very diligently… [Executive producers Lin-Manuel Miranda ] and John Rogers are talking constantly — you can see it on Twitter — and he’s very involved. Obviously, there’s a huge musical component to the series and that will be Lin’s domain. And he’s incredibly excited about it"
Music plays a big part in the Kingkiller books, so naturally having Hamilton’s LIn-Manuel Miranda around will be a boon. John Rogers, meanwhile, is the guy behind the fantasy-adventure series The Librarians, so there’s a pretty good pedigree here.

The Kingkiller Chronicle series doesn’t have an official name yet, but we know a few details, namely that it’s a prequel. That means Kvothe probably won’t be in it, or if he is, he’ll be a kid. The leading characters will be a pair of traveling musicians (possibly Kvothe’s parents), so Miranda will still be able to do his thing. We’re guessing the movies will adapt the book series straight.
There’s still no release date for the series or the movies, but Kingkiller fans are used to that. The Name of the Wind, the first book in the series, came out in 2007. The Wise Man’s Fear hit book shelves in 2011, and since then, fans have been waiting for the third and final book in the trilogy, The Doors of Stone. Apparently Rothfuss is taking cues from George R.R. Martin.
