Javier Bardem to play Stilgar in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movie

Legendary Pictures isn’t pulling any punches when it comes to casting director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movie. This time, Deadline reports that Academy Award-winning actor Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) will play the role of Stilgar, the leader of the Freman, a group of people who have long lived on the desert planet of Dune. Lead character Paul Atreides eventually joins them on his journey.

Bardem is the second actor to be cast as a Freman. Singer/actress Zendaya who will play the role of Chani, the Freman girl that Paul Atreides falls in love with. Star Wars actor Oscar Isaac will play Paul’s father, Duke Leto Atreides, and Rebecca Ferguson will play his mother, Lady Jessica. Charlotte Rampling will play the role of the powerful leader of the Bene Gesserits, Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam. Stellan Skarsgård is the grossly obese and violent Baron Harkonnen, Dave Bautista will play Glossu “the Beast” Rabban Harkonnen, and Timothée Chalamet who play Paul himself. This thing is stacked with talent!

Dune takes place thousands of years of from now in a time when man has explored and settled on other planets, including Arrakis (Dune), a desert planet that produces the Melange (Spice), a substance craved by everyone in the known galaxy. The Spice gives humans blue-in-blue eyes, enhances brain power, heightens the senses, and leads to an elongated lifespan. It’s also cripplingly addictive, but you can’t have something for nothing.

We still don’t know when Dune will hit theaters, but it looks like Villeneuve is putting together quite the event.
