Naomi Watts reveals what attracted her to the Game of Thrones prequel
By Corey Smith
While speaking with Collider to promote her new film The Wolf Hour, Naomi Watts coyly answered some questions about HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel show, which she is headlining:
"All I can say is, the show, the brand, everything that Game of Thrones sets out to achieve, it does in such a terrific way. It’s such a great group of people to be involved with. It is a whole new group of people that said it’s very connected obviously, to the same author. And I’m just super thrilled."
A couple points: first, “The Wolf Hour” would be a pretty good name for an episode of this show, which still doesn’t have an official title. Second, the “author” is, of course, Song of Ice and Fire creator George R.R. Martin, with whom prequel showrunner Jane Goldman worked when fleshing out the concept.
It’s interesting that Watts says the new show will be “very connected” to Game of Thrones, since the prequel is set thousands of years before any of the characters we know were even born. I assumed the prequel would only have surface-level connections to the original show, but perhaps there’s more to it.

Not that Watts is going to reveal anything. She’s perfectly willing to talk about The Wolf Hour, where she plays a paranoid novelist who shuts herself inside her New York City apartment during a particularly violent summer in the 1970s. But when asked for details about her Game of Thrones prequel character, “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret,” she tows the company line and how:
"I got a lot of… I… I’m not gonna go… I’m not gonna get myself into trouble."
And this is after Collider asked her how much information she had about the character before taking the part. There’s only one conclusion: her character is the Night Queen and she can’t let us find out.
Just kidding. Probably. Anyway, HBO is filming the pilot for the prequel later this year, so we’ll hopefully find out more in time.
Finally, here’s one of the trivia lovers out there: Watts is interviewed alongside The Wolf Hour co-star Jennifer Ehle, who played Catelyn Stark in the original unaired Game of Thrones pilot. Now go and impress your friends!
