At the WiC Club: Con of Thrones, the Game of Thrones fan community, and the future

The third annual Con of Thrones, the biggest Game of Thrones and Song of Ice and Fire convention of its kind, goes down this July in Nashville, Tennessee. I’ll be there, as will hundreds of fans who can’t get enough of George R.R. Martin’s imagined world, whether on the screen on the page. The cosplay, the panels, the people…it’s a great time.

But with the show coming to an end this year, Con of Thrones is heading for a bit of a reckoning. After all, can a convention dedicated to all things Game of Thrones keep going when there is no more Game of Thrones? That’s the question we turn around on this week’s WiC Club article, available in full exclusively to our members. Here’s a sampling:

"If HBO’s prequel is a hit, conventioneers have who knows how many more years of material waiting for them. But what if it’s not? What if Game of Thrones is all we get, at least for a while longer? True, conventions for certain fandoms have thrived in the absence of ongoing source material. Star Trek conventions were famously vibrant for years after the original series wrapped in 1969, and Mischief Management’s own LeakyCon, a celebration of all things Harry Potter, has been going strong for a decade and shows no signs of flagging. But other pop culture conventions have shuttered their doors. In 2016, Mischief Management launched GeekyCon (geddit?), which catered to members of the Doctor Who, Supernatural, Glee, Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Disney fandoms. GeekyCon only had one outing before Mischief shut it down, citing lack of interest and an inability to land big-name guests. As a more special interest convention, Con of Thrones is a different animal, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be vulnerable once HBO wraps up the mainline show this May."

Whatever happens, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is coming to this next Con of Thrones, so even if the convention does eventually run into difficulty — and I’m far from convinced it will — this next one promises to be one to remember.
