Michael Rooker’s key role in True Detective season 3, revealed
Michael Rooker (Yondo from Guardians of the Galaxy, Merle Dixon from The Walking Dead) has been revealed to have a major role in True Detective season 3. According to Vanity Fair, the actor’s involvement in the show was supposed to remain secret until after this most recent episode, but viewers spotted him of him in a picture on the wall in the office of Harris James, a former police investigator turned head of security for Hoyt Foods. So now the cat is out of the bag:
"Does True Detective think they can just slide Michael Rooker by me? from TrueDetective"
Rooker will play the head of the fictional Hoyt family, which has a ton of influence over rural northwest Arkansas in the ’80s and ’90s. The inspiration for the Hoyt family seems to be drawn from the real-life Tyson family, the chicken people. Tyson Foods is still very much involved with that part of the country. In fact, series creator Nic Pizzolatto went to the University of Arkansas, right near where Detectives Hays (Mahershala Ali) and West (Stephen Dorff) are looking for the missing Julie Purcell.

Rooker will likely play a villain, seeing as how the latest episode, “Hunters in the Dark,” ended with Tom Purcell, Julie’s father, breaking into the Hoyt family mansion and discovering one of the mysterious “pink rooms.” This is probably where Julie was held after her kidnapping. And then Harris James sneaks up behind him and the episode fades to black. So Sinister Harris James + Creepy Hoyt Mansion + Rooker Playing Hoyt = Rooker is the bad guy. It’s simple TV math.
There are only two episodes left in this season, so it’s impressive that Pizzolatto kept Rooker’s involvement a secret for as long as he did. We’re covering the third of season of True Detective right here. Follow along to see how this all turns out!
