2. Watchmen (HBO)

Of all these upcoming shows, this is the one I’m most interested in. Zach Snyder proved the richness of this material with his 2009 movie version of Alan Moore’s classic graphic novel. HBO’s new Watchmen series won’t another retelling of that story, but rather set afterwards in a kind of alternate reality.

Pros

Superheroes are in. You need look no further than the Marvel Cinematic Universe for proof of that. Dark, brooding anti-heroes like Walter White or Tony Soprano are also popular. So far, no studio has been able to successfully combine those two things. With Watchmen, HBO could pull it off.

The network knows how to produce quality content. We can rest assured that Watchmen will have seamless special effects, a tight script and just the right cast. With Lost’s Damon Lindelof at the helm, it will be hard for this series to go wrong.

Cons

At the end of the day, Watchmen might not have enough fantasy to compete for the hearts of dragon-loving, White Walker-hating Game of Thrones fans. The series will undoubtedly have all the sex and violence we crave, but is there enough lore to keep us hooked and developing fan theories?
