14. The Chronicles of Narnia (Netflix)

Netflix is no stranger to adapting children’s stories. A Series of Unfortunate Events was a critical success, and parents still protest each new season of 13 Reasons Why long after they’ve dropped. Netflix’s next big YA project will be The Chronicles of Narnia. Can the streaming giant outdo the success of the recent Disney movies?

Pros

While the series has been adapted as movies before, not all of the books got the royal treatment. As such, Netflix may be able to draw fans in with the promise of hitherto unexplored material.

It’s also worth noting that Netflix is producing The Chronicles of Narnia with the blessing of C.S. Lewis’ family. In a statement released by Netflix, grandson Douglas Gresham said that “Netflix seems to be the very best medium” to tell the classic stories. Hopefully this translates to high quality storytelling.

Cons

One drawback for The Chronicles of Narnia may be that it will be too family friendly. The series’ leads are children and (later) teenagers, meaning it will appeal to a younger audience. It’s hard to get your binge on over a weekend if you’re limited to watching with son and daughter before their 9:00 p.m. bedtime.

Additionally, the series may not take long to binge; Netflix has yet to confirm whether this is a proper TV show, with seasons and episodes, a collection of seven or so movies, or something else. Depending on how Netflix spins this, we could end up with merely one weekend of entertainment. That’s not enough to fill that Game of Thrones gap in our lives.
