Fifteen new shows that could fill the Game of Thrones void
12. Lazarus (Amazon)
As if Amazon wasn’t taking on enough projects over the next few years, the online retail giant is adding new series Lazarus to its sci-fi repertoire. This story is adapted from a comic of the same name; it’s set in a future where the world has been devastated by war and climate change, and rival families fight for control. It promises to be action-packed and violent with a heavy helping of political commentary.
Pros
To repeat: there will be action, violence and political commentary. Sign us up! These three tenets are perhaps the biggest draws for Game of Thrones and should attract a similar audience to a new series. Bonus points for the rival families, which makes us instantly think of the Houses in Thrones.
It’s also promising that the source material is pretty new. Lazarus won’t tell a story we’re already tired of hearing. It should be fresh and exciting, with twists and turns that aren’t widely spoiled.
Cons
Amazon may be splitting its focus too much. It has plenty of contenders on this list, but how many can actually be of a quality high enough to take the Game of Thrones crown when money and manpower is being divided so many ways?
Additionally, it will be interesting to see if Game of Thrones’ fantasy fanbase will transfer easily to a new sci-fi setting. The two classifications are often lumped together, but in practice they’re very different beasts. Will the dragon and White Walker fans stick around when a new story is more firmly rooted in science?
