American Gods is embracing New Media in this Sunday’s new episode, “Munnin.” Filling the hole that Gillian Anderson left behind, Kahyun Kim is stepping into the role of the god of all things advertising and entertainment. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Kim dished about her new role and what taking it on has meant for her.
On Sunday, we’ll see New Media arise from what EW calls “a digital pool of selfies, emojis, and techno-pop beats.” It’s the perfect introduction for a god who represents the technologically obsessed world we live in. “We really wanted to show this new wave in our generation,” Kim said. “The way she comes out… for me, it was almost like an iPhone coming out for this generation, this new shiny present.”

New Media’s strength comes from all the love and adoration people give her on Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and the rest. The love/obsession/addiction of the followers is the fuel that keeps her going. If you watched the first season of the show, you’ll notice there’s a stark difference between the New and Old Media. While Anderson’s Media was all about icons like Marilyn Monroe and David Bowie, this New Media is someone that millennials will relate to. “I love Gillian’s work, she is brilliant, and when I read American Gods, was definitely my favorite character,” Kim said. “When I got to step into this role, it was clear to me that it is very much New Media, a totally different character. It wasn’t that I had to recreate what Gillian was doing, which was very liberating to me.”
With a New Media also comes a whole new wardrobe. In her first appearance, she’s dressed in schoolgirl attire and is giving a manga vibe. “ctually when we were discussing the costume, it was more Gwen Stefani, pop culture, like Lady Gaga,” Kim said. Old or new, Media is all about image, so we expect a lot of thought to go into the look.
New Media’s specific role in the impending war between gods is unknown at the time, but we can imagine she’ll get down to doing what she’s good at:
"She knows how to manipulate, like social media, and knows how to use people. She reaches the mass, she has the power of followers — as in worshippers, but also, legit followers — and Mr. World uses that."
Sunday’s episode of American Gods can’t come soon enough!
