4. Visual appeal and the soundtrack

Like any other Snyder film, the cinematography and the look of the 2009 Watchmen is outstanding
. Nearly each frame is a piece of art. The soundtrack received a more mixed recaption, although fans generally seem to love the choice of Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable” over the opening fight scene:

The visual effects of the film are top-notch, with the special effects surrounding Dr. Manhattan being particularly impressive and expressive for the time.

While the movie is set in 1980s, it combines both a retro and futuristic look. There are lots of visual motifs sprinkled throughout the film, such as when the Minutemen, a superhero team from the ’60s, are posed in a recreation of Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper:

Snyder is a unique visual stylist, and while HBO won’t have his particular taste for its new show, it will surely hire cinematographers and directors who bring their own ideas to bear.
