The Lord of the Rings is making a comeback. Amazon is pouring ungodly amounts of money into an upcoming show set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, and now, The Hollywood Reporter has it that German developer Daedalic Entertainment is making a video game all about Gollum, the bug-eyed One Ring-loving cave dweller we all know and love.
The game will be set after Gollum finds the One Ring but before that filthy Bilbo Bagginses steals his Precious in The Hobbit. Basically, I think that means you’ll play as Gollum wandering around Middle-earth making mischief before deciding to hole up under a mountain for a few hundred years. “We have the story that we all know from the book, but everything that happens to him before he appears in the book are the main things we will see in our game,” said Daedalic CEO and co-founder Carsten Fichtelmann. “We will tell the story before he first appears in the books.”
"Our goal was to present a storytelling experience. About four years ago, I caught Middle-earth Enterprises in Berkeley, maybe like Peter Jackson did 20 years ago, and I said we’re interested in licensing Lord of the Rings. After some negotiations, it was clear that the Tolkien estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-orientated than some of the other products that came out over the last years."

As for what you’ll actually being doing in the game, it’s still in the early stages, but Fichtelmann has ideas. “Since this is a game about Gollum, if you imagine gameplay, stealth is the obvious choice as opposed to combat with a sword.” So like this, but with Gollum:
Players will also get to take on Gollum’s split personality problem from the inside, as Smeagol the hobbit slowly turns into Gollum the monster. “The inner conflict of two characters will be something the player will experience,” Fichtelmann said. “Two conflicting characters talking to you, affecting choices of decisions and also control of the character.”

At the moment, the game is scheduled for release in 2021, on “all relevant console platforms at that time.” So the XBox M-80 or whatever it ends up being. And again, that’ll probably be around the time Amazon gets its Lord of the Rings show out. The LOTR comeback is underway.
