Torchwood: Captain Jack will feature in Captain John’s own series!
By James Aggas
James Marsters’s Captain John is reunited with an old lover/enemy in his own series, as John Barrowman will feature as Captain Jack Harkness in the Torchwood spin-off series, The Sins of Captain John!
A couple of months ago, Big Finish announced a very special Torchwood release for next year: Torchwood: The Sins of Captain John. A spin-off series focused on the completely amoral (not to mention psychopathic) rogue Captain John Hart, the series looks set to offer a very different look at the Torchwood universe.
However, as it turns out, he won’t be the only former Time Agent to star in this box set. John Barrowman will also return as Captain Jack Harkness, who will be on Captain John’s trail.
Here’s Big Finish’s official description for the box set, letting us know what we can expect:
"Captain John Hart. Adventurer, thief, lover, rogue Time Agent and all-round bad egg.Everyone’s favourite blackguard is back and he’s in a lot of trouble. He’s trapped in the ruins of an exploding space station. He’s unleashed a force from beyond that will consume the universe. And he’s running low on snacks.Luckily, he has four hours to tell you how he got in this mess. There are zombies, mad scientists, hot tubs, and the talkative head of Oliver Cromwell just won’t shut up. Plus Captain Jack Harkness is on his trail."
The last time Captain John appeared in Torchwood, he got up to a LOT of mayhem in The Death of Captain Jack.

Interestingly, the stories will also be set before Captain Jack joins Torchwood or even meets the Doctor. So I expect he’ll be a little more irresponsible himself in this series, based on what we saw in The Empty Child and the spin-off box set, The Lives of Captain Jack.
If you haven’t listened to the latter release, The Lives of Captain Jack was a rather fascinating look at our favorite immortal character at four different points in his life, away from both Torchwood and the Doctor. It had a nice balance between the styles and tones of both Doctor Who and Torchwood, featuring the family friendliness of one while also including more than a few hints of the other.
However, I suspect that, while The Sins of Captain John will have echoes of Lives, I doubt it’ll be as family friendly. Especially if The Death of Captain Jack is anything to go by.
Released back in March last year, The Death of Captain Jack was – despite the title – essentially Captain John’s very own Torchwood episode. To say that he got up to a lot of mischief in the story is an understatement. He basically wrecked a lot of the past couple of centuries, and caused the deaths of many of our favorite characters.
Despite that, it has to be said, that story was a lot of fun to listen to. Because of the strength of that story (and of course, his original appearances in the television series), I’m really looking forward to him getting his own box set. It’s going to be a long wait, as it’s not out until January 2020. But if it’s as good as The Death of Captain Jack, then it should definitely be worth it.
